Apprenticeship scheme launched
On June 8th,Tom Browning signed up for a level 2 apprenticeship in Traditional Shipwright skills. He is joined by others employed by Standard Quay shipwrights, who will be trained over the next year and a half to progress to a level 3 qualification.
The North West Kent College specialises in marine based courses, and has developed the course to be run by the National Sea Training Centre. Rochester Independent College will also be participating in the scheme.
The apprenticeship scheme will be using a refurbished workshop and classroom at Standard Quay, as well as on the barge itself.
Now we are in place to help ensure that the skills of the shipwright are not lost to the nation and importantly will establish a nationally recognised qualification for young people to pursue a career in boat building.
