Rudder Repairs - In the Past

CAMBRIA is owned by a registered charity, the Cambria Trust, established with the specific objective of restoring, preserving and using what many view as the most famous sailing barge ever!

Restoration

The Cambria Trust is a largely voluntary body which is currently engaged in a major restoration project, with the principal support of an award of £990,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Trust also has to raise in the region of £400,000 to complete the task and is engaged in fund raising. Volunteer teams from the Friends of Cambria also help with various aspects of the restoration and we are currently engaged in preparing an exhibition centre in Faversham adjacent to the barge which will explain the aims and objectives of the project to visitors.

What will CAMBRIA be used for?

Once fully restored, CAMBRIA will be used for sail training and educational purposes, thus preserving the vessel and introducing her to a new audience who will be taught how she traded under sail alone – a supreme example of environmental transport which will also promote an understanding of new alternatives.

Operating as a floating classroom, CAMBRIA will moor at a variety of locations throughout the Thames, Medway and Swale estuaries, offering environmental training and education in social and economic history for Junior school children.

Young people and apprentices will take part in sail training and associated activities. The Trust wil also operate the CAMBRIA as a floating museum interpreting the history of London River, extending the opportunity to encourage interest and support from the general public.
